The Faculty of Medicine is founded as a Higher Medical Institute for training specialists of Medicine within the framework of the Medical Academy by Resolution of the Council of Ministers of 08.04.1982. Until 1995 it was an independent higher school when it joined the structure of the newcreated Trakia University, Stara Zagora.
The Faculty of Medicine is certified on ISO 9001:2008 for training students, post-graduate students and preparing a doctorate.
The academic staff of the faculty comprises: 70 professors and associate professors, 137 assistants and lecturers working in 24 Departments. During the academic year 2013/2014 in the faculty are trained 1100 students, including 95 foreign students from Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

MEDICINE - professional qualification ‘Doctor of Medicine’
The specialty is accredited by a resolution of NAOA, CM of 16.10.2008.
In the faculty is carried out highly qualified and specialized academic, teaching, research and diagnostic-therapeutic activity, realized in the University hospital, consultative, organizing, methodical and other activities.
The training of the Faculty of Medicine is in full conformity with the State requirements for acquirement of high education in the specialty ‘Medicine’ and is carried out during 6 years – 10 academic semesters and 10 months State practice while State exams are passed. The faculty curriculum includes 52 compulsory and 36 optional subjects. A system for accumulation of credits of different subjects for the full course of study of medicine is introduced according to studied compulsory and optional subjects. In the ratified new curriculum of 2009 practice training for students from 1st till 6th year is compulsory. In the faculty of Medicine can be trained Bulgarian and foreign persons graduate at ‘Medicine’ for acquiring a specialty or qualification and full-time doctorates.
Profound knowledge of graduates of Faculty of Medicine at Trakia University, Stara Zagora, gives them a chance for good professional realization in our country. Graduate foreign and Bulgarian students make equal their diplomas in other countries successfully. Since 2011 graduate doctors receive also and European diploma supplement, if they so desire.
The form of medical study is only full-time which is carried out according to a curriculum, worked out on the basis of Unified State requirements for the specialty. After been graduate of the full course of study (6 years), students obtain professional qualification ‘Doctor of Medicine’ and educational qualification degree ‘Master of Medicine’.
Academic year fee for foreign students is 4900€ and for persons with dual citizenship is 2450€.
 
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES – professional qualification ‘social specialist’
The specialty is open and accredited by resolution of the Accreditation Council of NAOA of 2001. The specialty has obtained program accreditation for professional direction ‘social activities’ in FM for educational qualification degree ‘Bachelor’ and EQD ‘Master’ on the basis of very good evaluation according to NAOA criteria and period of validity 6 (six) years by resolution of NAOA of 02.10.2007.
The training of specialists with high education in ‘Social activities’ is conformed to various and complex social problems and needs of different social categories of persons. They are specialists with wide medical, psychological, pedagogical, economic, sociological and law training which is a precondition for effective resolving variety of problems in the social sphere.
The training process includes scientific disciplines corresponding to the requirements for this specialty conformed to the new normative order of Ministry of labour and social policy and requirements of contemporary international trends for development of social work. In the training of future specialists particular attention is assigned to the team – work and formation of practical-applied skills. This orientation in the training is a strategic direction in introducing credit system in education of future specialists. The mastering of necessary skills is provided by institutional practice which is introduced since the 2nd year of study.
The duration of study for EQD ‘Bachelor’ is 4 years for full-time and by correspondence.
Students graduate for EQD ‘Bachelor’ of the same or other professional directions, as well as these of EQD ‘professional bachelor’ of the same direction have the possibility to continue their training in Master programme ‘Organization and management of social work’.
Academic year fee for foreign students is 900€ and for persons with dual citizenship is 450€.
 
HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT – professional qualification ‘Manager of Health Care and Practice Lecturer’
The specialty ‘Health Care Management’ is open by resolution of the Accreditation Council of NAOA of 13.11.2003 which gives positive evaluation of the project for opening the specialty in the Faculty of Medicine, Trakia University, Stara Zagora. Nowadays the specialty is accredited on the basis of general evaluation ‘very good’ (maximum) for six years (Protocol 27 of 09.07.2009). The higher education on this specialty is on educational qualification degree ‘Bachelor’ and ‘Master’ of professional direction ‘Public Health’.
The students having accomplished their obligations according to the curriculum which responds to the requirements of USR obtain a diploma of higher education EQD ‘Bachelor’ or ‘Master’ and professional qualification ‘Manager of health care and practice lecturer’. In this relation in the training process they acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills for accomplishing the basic functions in these directions.
The curriculum is entirely conformed to the Order for unified State requirements and with the syllabus are worked out for training students of EQD ‘Bachelor’ – full-time and by correspondence forms and of EQD ‘Master’ – by correspondence. The duration of study is 5 semesters for full-time and 6 semesters by correspondence.
The realization of graduates can be carried out as:
·        Managers of health care in medical institutions of out-of-hospital (primary and specialized) and hospital medical aid, social institutions for children and adults;
·        Lecturers and collaborators in high medical schools and scientific organizations of health care.
 
 
NURSE – professional qualification ‘Nurse’
The specialty has an open procedure of project for opening a specialty of regulated professions. The evaluation of the project is positive by a resolution of the Accreditation Council of NAOA of 02.10.2008.
The nurse possesses the necessary competences to work in all structures of health care, regulated by the Law of medical institutions, according to the needs in the country, global trends and European requirements and real possibilities of the university.
The nurse carries out an amount of activities (independently, on doctor’s prescription and in team) directed towards curative-prophylactic complete nurse care for man-healthy or ill.
Nurse training in the Faculty of Medicine is with educational qualification degree ‘Bachelor’ and with duration of four years.
Academic year fee for foreign students is 3200€ and for persons with dual citizenship is 1600€.
MIDWIFE – professional qualification ‘midwife’
The specialty has an open procedure of project for opening a specialty of regulated professions. The evaluation of the project is positive by a resolution of the Accreditation Council of NAOA of 02.10.2008.
The midwife carries out an amount of activities (independently, on doctor’s prescription and in team) directed towards prophylactic, promotive, diagnostic, medico-social and health care, actions toward girl, woman and family, primarily to the pregnant woman, lying-in woman, new-born child and gynecological woman patient.
The basis object of the training in specialty ‘Midwife’ is to form health professionals possessing necessary competences in order to work in all structures of public health, regulated by the Law of medical institutions, according to the needs in the country, global trends and European requirements and real possibilities of the university.
The training in specialty ‘Midwife’ in faculty of Medicine is with educational qualification degree ‘Bachelor’ and with duration of four years.
