General information
  
Medical College of Stara Zagora was established in 1947. During the period of its existence it has changed its status from a Secondary Medical School, later to a College Insitute of Medicine and by Decree № 16 of 27.01.1997 of the Council of Ministers it was transformed to a Medical College in the structure of Trakia University.
The College has modern facilities, where optimum conditions are provided for a quality education of students in two recognized and accredited specialties– “Rehabilitation therapist” and “Medical laboratory assistant”, as in 2013 the college launches the major "Geriatric care" which is new to the country, and in 2014 the major "Paramedic". The College has a sufficient number of classrooms and auditoriums equipped with multimedia stationary in order to carry out the theoretical training of those specialties. There is a large hall - aula fixed with multimedia and professional sound system for conducting theoretical classes, celebrations, promotions. There is a computer lab to conduct courses in Informatics at the College.
The library satisfyes the needs of students with the necessary textbooks and literature. Near the College there is a student canteen.The students are provided with Student Hostels.
Practical training is conducted in specially equipped classrooms and learning laboratlories. For the specialty "Rehabilitation therapist" a modern equipment is provided which is necessary for the realization of educational workshops on basic subjects - "Kinesitherapy", “Physical Therapy” and “Therapeutic Massage”. For the specialty "Medical laboratory assistant" there are two teaching laboratories made - clinical and microbiological for conduct of the training on basic subjects “Clinical Laboratory”and “Microbiology”. Student practical training in both specialties is conducted in clinical facilities / public and private health structures / located within the city and region.
Training of students is carried out by teachers of Medical College and Faculty of Medicine at Trakia University . The academic staff consists of proven professionals who continuously develop their qualification.

           Rehabilitation therapist

 
             Major "Rehabilitation therapist" for professional bachelordegree is accredited by Decision of the National Agency of Assessment and Accreditation from 09/06/2011 with accreditation validity for six years and capacity of 120 students.
          Rehabilitation therapist is a medical specialist, graduated from Medical College and received a diploma of higher education degree "professional bachelor" with professional qualification "Rehabilitation therapist"
         Training is full time, duration- 3 years.
         The total number of hours in the academic curriculum and the required credits is consistent with the Unified State Requirements to acquire higher education in the professional field of "Healthcare Services" for "professional bachelor" degree, adopted by Council of Ministers Decree № 238/ 26.09.2008.
          Curriculum for specialty "Rehabilitation therapist"
          Semester fees:
         - For Bulgarian students- BGN 350
         - For students with dual citizenship- EUR 650
         - For foreign students- EUR 1,300
        The admission to the college for specialty "Rehabilitation therapist" is performed by passing a competitive examination, written test or written examination in Biology in two sessions- April (preliminary) and July (regular) or based on the assessment of the state matriculation exams in Biology of the high school diploma.
         After graduating rehabilitation therapists work in a team with a clinician doctor, physiotherapist and other medical staff by performing a volume of activities. They can find professional realization in hospitals - the cabinets in physical therapy, massage and physiotherapy, in clinics and wards, diagnostic and health centers, convalescent homes, hospital resorts and spa centers, in kindergartens and schools, sports centers and etc.
          Due to the development of the private health care sector in the country and the development of new structures, the demand for rehabilitation therapists is growing. There is a big interest of foreign students, mainly from Turkey and Republic of Macedonia.
          During the academic year 2011/2012 year, at Medical College are trained 156 students from the major "Rehabilitation therapist".

 
        Medical laboratory assistant
 
          Major "Medical laboratory assistant" for professional bachelor degree is accredited by Decision of the National Agency of Assessment and Accreditation from 09/06/2011 with accreditation validity for six years and capacity of 90 students.
          Medical laboratory assistant is a medical specialist, graduated from Medical College and received a diploma of higher education degree "professional bachelor" with professional qualification "medical laboratory assistant".
         Training is full time, duration- 3 years.
         The total number of hours in the academic curriculum and the required credits are consistent with Unified State Requirements to acquire higher education in the professional field of "Healthcare Services" for "professional bachelor" degree, adopted by Council of Ministers Decree № 238/26.09.2008.

They can find a professional realization in hospitals and hospital care, clinical, microbiological, histological, parasitological and other laboratories.
          Due to the development of the private health sector in the country and the development of new private structures, respectively laboratories, medical laboratory assistant demand increases. During the academic year 2011/2012, at Medical College are trained 83 students from the specialty "Medical laboratory assistant".
           
          

         Geriatric care 

 
           Major "Geriatric care" for professional bachelor degree is new to the country and Medical College at Trakia University, Stara Zagora launches it for the first time. It is accredited by Decision of the National Agency of Assessment and Accreditation 2013, with capacity of 60 students.
          Geriatric specialist is a medical specialist, graduated from Medical College and received a diploma of higher education degree "professional bachelor" with professional qualification "geriatric specialist."
          Training is full time, duration-3 years.
          The admission is performed by passing a competitive examination, written test in Biology or General language culture in two sessions- April (preliminary) and July (regular) or based on the assessment of the state matriculation exams in Biology or Bulgarian language and Literature of the high school diploma.
          Geriatric specialists receive professional competencies that enable them to carry out integrated health (medical and social) care services for the elderly and old people - healthy, living alone or with diseases, disabilities and dementia manifestations.
          After graduating geriatric specialist can work in homes for elderly people, home social patronage care, day care centers for elderly people, geriatric units in the hospital and outpatient care, institutions working with elderly people with severe illnesses, disabilities and dementia, institutions providing care for elderly people at home / home care /, rehabilitation centers, hospices, other geriatric-oriented units and freelance work in the country and abroad.
          Geriatrics (Greek: geron – “old man” andiatreia - “treatment”) is a science of the diseases of adults and the elderly, including diagnosis, treatment and methods for social rehabilitation. Geriatrics is called to help the elderly and very old people to lead a better life.
 
            Paramedic  
 
Since 2014 Medical College-Stara Zagora launches the major "Paramedic" for professional bachelor degree with admission of 30 students for the first year.
The paramedic carries out activities in emergency assistance related to the initial assessment and maintenance of vital functions and provides the transport to the hospital. The paramedic works alone / when the team is composed only of paramedics or with medical specialists /physicians and health care professionals/, depending on the nature of his assignment and the nature of the emergency team.
The training is full-time lasting 3 years.
The admission of students in the specialty "Paramedic" is based on the assessment of state matriculation exams in Biology or Bulgarian language and Literature from the high school diploma, written test or written test or exam in Biology or General language culture.
After graduating the paramedic can work in centers for emergency, emergency departments, emergency divisions, and all units and terrains where an emergency care is needed.
          Nowadays, the continuously growing demand for healthcare professionals both-nationally and globally, creates conditions for their successful implementation in our country and abroad.
